Automating the visual cloud observations with Lufft ceilometers

Challenge:
Establishing a nationwide network for cloud observation, the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) needed a new ceilometer type that could deliver reliable data for both national and international end users. Special requirements surpassed the specifications of typical products on the market.

Solution:
During extensive in-depth testing of our ceilometer Lufft CHM 15k, we worked closely with KNMI to adapt our product to the its needs. Measures included a specially developed firmware update to stabilize the ceilometer during a 24/7 operation.

Benefits:
Equipped with 50 of our ceilometers CHM 15k the cloud observation network works reliably, detecting high cirrus clouds and aerosol layers more precisely than ever. Remote access, one key requirement together with simple network integration, eases daily operation.

“The Lufft CHM 15k cloud sensors stood out due to its precise measurements of aerosol layers up to 15 km, the differentiation of multiple cloud layers, easy network integration as well as remote access.”
